The Difference Is Electric

A heat pump does the job of an air conditioner and a furnace.  But unlike a furnace, it doesn't burn fuel to create heat.  It uses electricity to keep your home warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and comfortable all year round.  American Standard's Heritage® heat pump family offers exclusive comfort technology and a range of options to give you the most quiet, efficient and comfortable home heating and cooling you've ever experienced.

How does it work?

A heat pump is simply an air conditioner that contains a valve that lets it switch between "air conditioner" and "heater."  When the valve is switched one way, the heat pump acts like an air conditioner, and when it is switched the other way it reverses the flow of Freon and acts like a heater.

A heat pump is extremely efficient. Rather than burning a fuel, what it is essentially doing is "moving heat."

Rating Heat Pumps

The cooling performance of heat pumps, like that of central air conditioners, is rated according to the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER).  This is the cooling output divided by the power input for a hypothetical average U.S. climate.  The higher the SEER, the more efficient the air conditioner.  Heating performance is measured by the heating season performance factor (HSPF), a ratio of the estimated seasonal heating output divided by the seasonal power consumption for an average U.S. climate.

For the most efficient heat pumps, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) recommends a SEER rating of at least 14.5 and HSPF rating in the range of 9.0.  You'll be pleasantly surprised at the outstanding ratings of the American Standard Heritage® heat pump family.  The Heritage® 18 Heat Pump significantly surpasses government efficiency standards with a SEER rating of up to 17.5 and an HSPF rating of up to 9.0.

An economical option for your home

In Northeast Ohio a heat pump can save you money on your heating bills.  A Heritage Hybrid™ comfort system installed by Service Air combines a Heritage® Heat Pump with a Freedom® furnace, allowing you to respond to fluctuations in utility costs by switching between gas and electric heat.
